ZOUK KL : HERTZ

12/4/2018

“It’s Hardstyle Baby!”

Recognizable by its pounding kicks, explosive drops and melodic vocals, Hardstyle or Hard Dance has evolved over the years breaking away from mainstream EDM and lodging itself between hardcore and house at a good 150bpm.
Following up a Trance-y March lineup, this year marks the first time ever that Zouk Club KL – Asia’s Largest Superclub is bringing an all-star lineup to the Mainroom with the likes of 2 of the hottest DJs in this scene – Coone and Atmozfears. Given this chance last Saturday (7th April 2018), Kuala Lumpur was the scene for purist electronic music lovers to get a taste of this growing work of art through Zouk KL’s own trademark festival titled ‘HERTZ’.

Local smashing DJ duo – Chukiess & Whackboi got the crowd in both Mainroom and Ace hyped up, till later into the night when Hardstyle lovers were all ready for a hint of Atmozfears. The Dutch DJ extraordinaire, opened with his famous collaboration with Hardwell and M.Bronx, “All That We Are Living For” which drove the crowd into a frenzy, fists pumping in the air, the occasional shuffle by festival clad Zouk-ers with bodies swaying to the catchy melodies of reversed basslines and kick drums.
It was not long till Coone hit the sets at Zouk Mainroom later that night. The room came alive with Coone’s LED visuals mixed with the opening thumping beats of “Here I Come”. The pace and beats didn’t slow as the fourth and final act of the night came. An atmosphere of uplifting sounds and chilling climaxes of Coone’s beats drew just the right vibes at HERTZ; before handing over to Bass Agents who closed the show with amazing energy to cap the night.

The regular resident magician, Chris Fleming – a close-up magician from UK have been roaming the grounds of Zouk Club KL performing his tricks and illusions for guests and regulars on a weekly basis. However, the greatest trick of the night was when former Barcelona and Paris Saint- Germain (PSG) star Ronaldinho appeared at the Superclub after his event at the UEFA Championship Trophy Tour earlier that day. The legendary football player made a pit stop at Velvet Underground and was given the sleight of hand prowess of Chris’s illusions, before heading over to Zouk KL Imperial for a much deserved after-party with a fantastic Saturday Imperial turn-out.
Overall, the night that screamed “Hardstyle baby!” was a huge success and there are already talks of the next installation for 2019 in plans. Fans can be sure that it’s going to get bigger and better next year.

Paul Kalkbrenner counts down last 100 days until Tomorrowland

12/4/2018

Picture
Because of the close bond between the German techno producer and Tomorrowland, the two parties teamed up to bring something truly remarkable to celebrate the last 100 Days until Tomorrowland's 2018 edition. A livestream performance took place on the legendary One World bridge in De Schorre, the venue where Tomorrowland takes place since year one. Year after year, Paul always brings joyful grand techno into the hearts of the People of Tomorrow.
The past two years, Paul was invited to bring his unique setting to the Mainstage. In all secret he plays live from the One World bridge... Where thousands of inspiring, warm hearted messages are written by the People of Tomorrow. Paul brings well known compositions in his own authentic way, but will also perform brand new productions coming from his new album Parts Of Life.

Paul Kalkbrenner's eighth album, Parts Of Life (May 18) comes a decade after his Double Platinum selling LP Berlin Calling, and feels similarly definitive for an artist who has spent the last 10 years topping charts and performing his singular strain of grand techno to ever growing audiences.

Parts of Life, follows Paul's Back To The Future trilogy, chronicling the arrival of techno in Berlin in the late 80s. It's clear those raw, stripped down early recordings left their mark. Parts of Life feels lean and elemental but big and joyful, it's a timeless record marked by invigoration.

This is Paul's most personal and revealing work, delivered in its purest form. Each track is simply titled with the working file number used in production. The album's still life cover, painted over a two year period by Paul's uncle Paul Eisel, offers another glimpse of Paul, depicting a series of unique personal objects.

Parts Of Life features 15 tracks named with the file numbers Kalkbrenner used during production. Its cover art is a painting from his uncle, Paul Eisel, depicting a collection of "unique personal objects."

TOMORROWLAND LOCKS DAVID GUETTA, VIRTUAL SELF, PENDULUM, MORE

6/4/2018

Picture
For the second time this week, more names have been added to Tomorrowland’s absolutely gigantic line-up.

Following yesterday’s announcement that Nicole Moudaber, Ricardo Villalobos, Alan Walker and others would be playing, today the festival has revealed that David Guetta, Pendulum (DJ set), Porter Robinson’s Virtual Self and Dixon had been added to the bill.
More acts announced today include former DJ Mag North America cover star Monika Kruse, Canadian glam-techno maestro Tiga, Tchami x Malaa, Laidback Luke and MULTIPLES – Speedy and Surgeon’s ferocious b2b moniker.

Tomorrowland takes place over the span of two weekends in July. The first weekend runs from Friday 20th to Sunday 22nd July while weekend two runs from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th. It’s shaping up to be a truly unforgettable experience with its home at De Schorre park, Belgium getting a proper makeover this year.

The line-up for this year’s festival is absolutely humongous, featuring stages curated by Martin Garrix, Charlotte de Witte and Eric Prydz among names like Richie Hawtin, Jamie Jones and Tale Of Us. Also performing, for the first time since 2015, will be Dutch EDM star Hardwell.

Last week, the festival sparked rumours that Swedish House Mafia might be set to perform at the festival with a since-deleted social media post.

Tomorrowland sold out in one hour this year.

14 YEARS OF MUSIC, PEOPLE, AND DANCE: ZOUK KL

1/4/2018

Picture

Zouk KL has come a long way since 2004, earning themselves the title of being known as Asia’s most iconic Superclub. The energy from the music, the patrons, and its staff are where the club draws its success from. Zouk KL prides itself of setting a new, elite standard of global club culture, which brings music and people together as one.

Originating from Singapore, the club is an iconic dance-music institution for most Malaysians that relocated from Jalan Ampang to TREC KL (Malaysia’s first purposefully built entertainment district) in August 2015. With 500,000 visitors annually, and regularly hosting the world’s top DJ’s, Zouk Club KL has established itself as a global clubbing destination setting new standards for music content, service, and design.
This year marks the 14th year that Zouk Club KL has kept it’s standing of being voted Asia’s Top 3 clubs, and moved up in its ranking from Top 21 to Top 19 globally by DJ Mag. Identifiable as the pioneering club in KL that challenges musical monotony, by trying new things such as bringing in more international DJ acts and cutting-edge music styles. Asia’s longest operating Superclub is still making new leaps and bounds in the world of dance music today.

Picture

For the past 14 years, since the establishment of Zouk Club KL, the clubbing scene has been seen as a way of life for a vast majority’s nightlife culture. These 4 letters – Z O U K has successfully revolutionized how Malaysians define partying & having a great night out. So much so, it has been an institution for us all.

Being synonymous to the impression given by the immortal works of creative legends – Warhol, Hockney and other iconic pop-art artists. This anniversary, Zouk KL dives into an atmospheric vibe of bringing elements of Pop Art to our loyal patrons. This will be represented through our clubbing grounds and show everyone a more unique and funky side of Zouk.

Pop art – the wick of the trendy and forever fun style of many art lovers; is often viewed as a representational visual communication, moving at a break-away speed in the world of artistic visualization. This art direction was chosen to be the main theme to bring our 14th anniversary to life based on how it has single handedly dominated the artistic century in the 80’s.

Picture

Being labeled the heart & soul of Malaysia’s nightlife entertainment, Zouk KL believes strongly in staying relevant to its patrons. This season, the Superclub has broken down barriers to bring you a brand-new remix of architectural innovation to its patrons and members.
From a business perspective, the management of Zouk KL is carefully guiding the design and direction of where, and how the club is moving ahead. Today, the challenge means going up against trends that change very fast. With the likes of social media, and the never-ending genres of new and exciting music, patrons demand newer experiences for nightlife entertainment. Staying connected with its patrons' needs is an important nerve within the whole ecosystem of Zouk’s creative philosophy.

The renovation will be rolled out over a number of phases with a focus on cutting edge design and interactivity. For the 14th Anniversary celebration, look forward to the latest update for ACE and Mainroom, connecting two of the best spaces in the club into one. Separated by a sliding glass door that opens up to an expanded balcony, getting a wider view of the action going on the dance floor. Also, a separate stair entrance for a quick recharge or rendezvous during a night of partying. Aside to this, there will be two more remaining phases of the venue upgrade to come within the next few months.
Douglas Matsen Guest – Zouk KL’s Design Director is not going to spill much, but from what can be seen so far, inspiration comes from the likes of digital sci-fi movie themes such as Ghost in The Shell, and Blade Runner, mixed with an urban underground feeling. He believes that the direction of embracing these new themes coupled with enhancing what already works so well, will strike the delicate balance with what clubbers want.
